I’ve been in the SEO game since 2019.

Back then, I worked full-time as an SEO specialist at a UX design agency and later at a SaaS company, using tools like Semrush and Ahrefs daily.

But in July 2022, I decided to go solo, which means building my SEO writing business and growing my website, Behind Rankings, (yep, the one you’re reading right now).

Since I keep my marketing budget lean, I’m always on the lookout for the best SEO tools for small businesses that are either inexpensive or free.

Luckily, with all the AI SEO tools and AI marketing tools popping up lately, prices for software have dropped quite a bit.

Below, I’m sharing the five tools I currently use to manage my own site and support client projects. Some are paid, some have free plans, and all of them have earned their spot on this list through real use.

How I picked these SEO tools for small business owners

You’ll find plenty of SEO software comparisons and reviews on my website, all based on the same simple criteria I use to test these tools myself.

Here’s what I look at:

  • Ease of use – Can you figure it out quickly, even if you’re brand new to SEO?
  • Does it do what it promises? – I check if the tool actually helps you achieve what it claims on its homepage (spoiler: not all of them do).
  • Pricing – I cover free, paid, and budget-friendly options so you can find the best fit for your needs.

That’s it. Just three things. No overcomplicated scoring systems.

If an SEO tool for small businesses checks these boxes, it earns a spot on my list below.

1. Semrush One

  • Best for: In-house teams, agencies, freelancers, and individual site owners who want one platform for SEO + AI search visibility
  • Pricing: Starts at $199/month
  • Free trial: 14 days
Semrush One March 2026

If your team needs an all-in-one SEO solution, Semrush One is a go-to option.

It covers everything, AI visibility tracking, including keyword research, on-page SEO, link building, technical SEO, PPC, social media, and content marketing.

The Pro plan starts at $139.95/month, while the more advanced Guru plan is $249.95/month. But if you’re just getting started, the free plan is a great way to test the waters, and you can upgrade to Pro when you need more features.

I’ve used both the free and paid versions of Semrush to grow my site and manage client projects, and some of my favorite features include:

My go-to Semrush features are:

  • Keyword Magic Tools to discover tons of keywords from one seed keyword in seconds
  • Keyword Overview report for keyword analysis
  • Position Tracking to check keyword rankings
  • Keyword Gap Analysis to discover keywords and pages that help my competitors grow
  • On-page SEO Checker to discover on-page optimization ideas
  • To name a few

Semrush also lets you run 10 free searches per day, which is often enough for small business owners to do quick research.

For more details, you can read my in-depth Semrush review in a separate article, where I discuss the pros and cons of this tool. Besides, I compare its performance to Ahrefs and Ubersuggest.

2. Search Atlas

  • Best for: SEO professionals, agencies, and small businesses looking for an affordable Ahrefs or Semrush alternative
  • Pricing: Starts at $99/month. With a Growth plan ($199/month), you can track visibility across ChatGPT, AI Mode, and Gemini.

Search Atlas SEO tool March 2026

Search Atlas is a relatively new player on the market. It’s also an all-in-one SEO tool for small businesses and established companies powered by AI.

It was launched in 2024, and it’s already making waves as a solid alternative to big names like Semrush and Ahrefs.

With Search Atlas, you can:

  • Check organic traffic, keywords, and backlinks for any website
  • See which pages and keywords bring in the most traffic for your competitors
  • Analyze competitor backlinks
  • Find the best keywords to rank for
  • Optimize content and track rankings
  • Run a technical SEO audit
  • Discover link-building opportunities and automate outreach
  • Automate SEO tasks with a WordPress plugin and the OTTO SEO feature
  • Speed up content creation and optimization with the SEO Content Assistant
  • …and a lot more!

Basically, instead of juggling multiple SEO tools, you get everything in one place.

I’ve only had a quick look, but from what I’ve seen, Search Atlas seems like a strong alternative to Ahrefs and Semrush.

Oh, and if you’ve used Ahrefs before, the interface might look familiar. It also packs quite a few features that are similar to Semrush.

Here’s a sneak peek at the Site Explorer feature:

Now, let’s talk about what makes Search Atlas stand out—OTTO SEO.

OTTO SEO is an AI-powered assistant that keeps an eye on your site. Just add a small tracking pixel, and OTTO will start analyzing your data, flagging technical issues, and suggesting content improvements—all in one dashboard.

It’s like having an SEO expert on autopilot, helping you boost rankings and organic traffic without the usual headache.

Search Atlas is more affordable than Ahrefs and Semrush. Pricing starts at $99/month for two user seats and five website projects.

They’re clearly committed to building something serious, and the roadmap looks ambitious. I’ve published a detailed review with my full assessment of data accuracy and features. Read my full Search Atlas review.

3. SE Ranking

  • Pricing: Starts at $65/month
  • Free trial: 14 days (no credit card required)
SE ranking
Google Tag Manager account of Behind Rankings..

SE Ranking has been around for years, and it’s one of those tools that keeps improving quietly without a lot of hype around it.

I’ve used it for 6 months, and what originally drew me in was the pricing. For small businesses that need a solid SEO foundation without paying for Semrush or Ahrefs, SE Ranking sits in a really useful middle ground.

The core toolkit covers what you’d expect from a full-featured small business SEO software: keyword research, rank tracking, backlink analysis, on-page SEO checker, and site auditing. Where it’s stepped up recently is in AI-powered features.

SE Ranking now includes an AI toolkit that lets you:

  • Track your brand’s visibility and citation positions in AI-generated search results
  • Analyze how competitors appear in AI Overviews and LLM responses like ChatGPT and Perplexity
  • Monitor AI visibility daily with updates included in the standard plan
  • Score your content against top SERP performers using the Content Editor

The Content Marketing toolkit is another part of SE Ranking I use regularly. The Content Idea Finder surfaces topic opportunities based on what’s working in your niche, while the Content Editor shows you exactly how your draft compares to the top-ranking pages for your target keyword. Together, they significantly speed up the research-to-publish workflow.

SE Ranking holds a 4.8 out of 5 rating across more than 1,300 reviews on G2, which tells you it’s not just impressive to SEO specialists but genuinely useful across a wider audience. The entry-level plan at $65/month gives you 5 projects, 1 user seat, and 500 tracked keywords, which covers most small business needs comfortably.

Pricing starts at $65/month for 1 user seat, 5 projects, and 500 tracked keywords.

AI visibility tracking for LLMs is available from $129/month (2,000 keywords + 100 daily prompts). 14-day free trial available and no credit card required.

If you’re comparing SE Ranking against Semrush and want a side-by-side breakdown of where each tool wins, I’ve published a detailed comparison that covers pricing, features, and data accuracy.

4. Ubersuggest

  • Best for: Solo site owners, startups, and small businesses looking for affordable SEO tools without a high recurring cost
  • Pricing: $29/month or $290 one-time lifetime access
  • Free trial: 7 days
Ubersuggest SEO Tool Jan 2026

For $290, most paid SEO tools give you one or two months of access. With Ubersuggest, that same amount gets you lifetime access for one website. That’s Neil Patel’s pitch, and for the right user, it genuinely delivers.

I purchased the Individual plan in December 2024, mainly because I wanted something affordable to track my own site’s rankings without a monthly commitment.

In 2026, I’m still using it regularly, mostly for rank tracking and the newer AI-focused reports that have been rolling out.

Here’s what the $29/month Individual plan (or the $290 lifetime option) includes:

  • 150 searches per day
  • Track up to 5 competitors
  • Up to 20,000 keyword suggestions
  • 200 content ideas
  • Track up to 125 keyword rankings
  • AI Keyword Overview report with LLM and AI Overview visibility data
  • AI Prompt Ideas feature for FAQ and content research
  • 10 AI prompts tracked per project

There are two features that stand out for me right now:

The first is the AI Keyword Overview, which shows which brands appear most often in AI Overviews and LLMs for a given keyword, along with the main sources AI uses when generating answers. When I looked up ‘AI SEO,’ my site Behind Rankings showed up as the second most-cited source — genuinely useful data for understanding your AI visibility.

The second feature I rely on is AI Prompt Ideas, which generates relevant prompts based on a seed keyword. I use it regularly when building out FAQ sections for blog posts, and it saves me a solid chunk of research time compared to finding those questions manually.

I’d say Ubersuggest is fine, but not exceptional. Some users on Reddit have shared frustrations about data accuracy and limited depth compared to Semrush or Ahrefs, and I partially agree. But for solo business owners who want to stay informed about their rankings without a heavy monthly spend, it’s a smart and practical choice — especially with the lifetime option.

5. Google Search Console

  • Best for: Every website owner, no exceptions
  • Pricing: Completely free
  • Setup time: 10–15 minutes
  • Data updated daily
My site GSC report March 2026

Google Search Console is the one tool I recommend to every single website owner, regardless of budget, niche, or business size. It’s free, it’s built by Google, and the data it gives you is more accurate than anything a third-party tool can provide. That alone makes it non-negotiable.

Once set up and verified, Google Search Console gives you a full picture of how your website performs in organic search. You can see:

  • Daily impression and traffic changes (increases and drops)
  • Average click-through rate across all your pages
  • Which search queries bring visitors to your site
  • Which pages Google has indexed — and why some haven’t been indexed
  • Any technical issues, mobile usability problems, or manual penalties from Google

In my experience, it’s also one of the fastest ways to catch problems before they become serious. When a Google algorithm update hits your site, the drop shows up in GSC almost immediately. That early warning gives you time to investigate and respond rather than wondering why traffic mysteriously declined.

One practical thing to watch for: if your pages are stuck in ‘Crawled — Not Indexed‘ or ‘Discovered — Not Indexed‘ status, GSC will usually point you toward the reason. From there, you can decide whether the page needs to be improved, consolidated, or simply resubmitted. This is particularly relevant for new websites and for ecommerce stores with many product pages.

I recommend setting up Google Search Console right after you create your website.

It will help you track and understand many processes that happen to your website behind the scenes. In particular, you’ll be able to see how long it takes for Google to index new pages (usually two weeks) and whether your new web pages are indexed.

If you experience any issues, you can check the Google Index Coverage report for more details. I also have an in-depth guide on how to do SEO for new websites that will help you avoid common SEO mistakes.

If your website is new, ensure to check Google Search Console data daily. This way, you’ll be able to spot any issues right away and ensure smooth website growth.

How to choose the right SEO tool

With so many options available, the most common mistake small business owners make is picking a tool based on name recognition alone or overspending on features they’ll never use.

Here’s a simple decision framework I recommend. Start with your situation and budget, then work outward from there.

How much does SEO for small business cost?

SEO costs may vary depending on who you work with, whether it is an agency or an individual contractor.

According to Backlinko, the average monthly SEO services for small businesses cost on average $497.16.

Backlinko’s research found that SEO agencies make a lot more money than freelancers.

Agencies are twice as likely to charge $1,000–$2,000 per month, while most freelancers fall in the $500–$1,000 range.

It makes sense since agencies cost more because you pay for a team’s collective expertise. Even if you work with just one SEO specialist, they have an entire team behind them to brainstorm ideas, troubleshoot issues, and refine strategies. This can be a big advantage if you deal with complex SEO challenges.

Freelancers, on the other hand, usually charge less unless they’re well-known experts in the industry.

A skilled freelancer can sometimes outperform an agency. The real challenge? Finding the right person.

In my opinion, the following are vital SEO skills to look for:

  • Have a portfolio of work or case studies
  • Be able to demonstrate the impact of their work
  • Have worked on at least 2-3 different projects
  • Have experience in your niche

That last point is super important.

Someone who has worked in your industry before will already know what works and what doesn’t.

They’ll bring valuable insights from past projects, which makes them worth the investment, even if they charge a little more.

FAQ

In my opinion, Google Search Console is the best free SEO tool available for any website owner. It gives you direct data from Google about how your site performs, which pages are indexed, which keywords bring traffic, and any technical issues that need attention.

Unlike third-party tools, the data comes straight from the source. So, it’s as accurate as it gets. Set it up the day you launch your site.

It depends on how actively you’re pursuing SEO.

For businesses publishing content regularly, managing client projects, or wanting to track AI search visibility alongside traditional rankings, Semrush One at $199/month is genuinely worth it.

For businesses just starting out or publishing occasionally, SE Ranking or Ubersuggest offer better value at that stage. Either way, use the free trial before you commit.

In my experience, the fundamentals matter most: clean site structure, fast load times, good mobile usability, and content that genuinely answers what your audience is searching for.

Once those are solid, keyword research and internal linking can accelerate growth significantly.

Many small businesses skip straight to advanced tactics while leaving basic technical issues in place. Google Search Console will usually show you the highest-priority fixes within days of setting it up.

Increasingly, yes!

AI SEO Tools like Semrush One and SE Ranking now include features that track how your brand appears in AI Overviews, ChatGPT responses, and other LLM-generated results. Ubersuggest has also added basic AI visibility reporting.

For most small businesses, the priority should still be strong traditional SEO, because AI search engines primarily pull from the same top-ranking organic content. Get the fundamentals right, and your AI visibility tends to follow.
